The Tongue
|
If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless.
James 1:26 (New Living Translation)
If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless.
James 1:26 (New International Version)
Anyone who sets himself up as “religious” by talking a good game is self-deceived. This kind of religion is hot air and only hot air.
James 1:26 (The Message)

This is the Word of the Lord; Thanks be to God. Amen.
However, this verse can easily be misconstrued into reprimanding one believer for holding another accountable. I suspect this might be why my sister e-mailed it to me, after I confronted her regarding her romantic relationship with an unbeliever.
Weigh in on this please.
Hi Appie, I suppose this verse can mean different things to different people. To me, it refers to cursing and talking badly of others.
In my opinion, your sister is (i’m assuming) an adult and is capable of making her own decisions – although do I admire you for voicing your opinion, letting her know how you feel about it and that you obviously believe it is wrong (her being in a relationship with an unbeliever). However, maybe your sister is able to show him the path to the Lord! That would be wonderful! But I feel that if you notice her “going off track”, then you should maybe have another talk with her.
