Life is a mine field, through which we must pick our way carefully. No matter the reason for telling it, a lie is a lie, and sinful.
But which is worse: To tell a lie for a noble purpose – if by doing so you slightly hurt someone you love dearly; or to stand haughty and unmoving, allow brutal truth to come out, and cause that person unnecessary and far worse pain?
