Listen to me, dear brothers and sisters. Hasn’t God chosen the poor in this world to be rich in faith? Aren’t they the ones who will inherit the Kingdom he promised to those who love him?

James 2:5 (New Living Translation)

Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?

James 2:5 (New International Version)

Listen, dear friends. Isn’t it clear by now that God operates quite differently? He chose the world’s down-and-out as the kingdom’s first citizens, with full rights and privileges.

James 2:5 (The Message)

I think this passage reminds us all that wealth is not always a sign of God’s blessing. I find myself disturbed at the amount of poor people in the developing world who seem to by drawn to the misguided teaching of the prosperity preachers. Some of the most Godly people I have met in my life have been people who own very little material possesions but have a great understanding of Kingdom values.
